January 2015 at Shishur Sevay

It was quiet in the last few weeks. And for good reason. The Annual Report is being finalized. That of course requires a lot of our attention and work. But all this does not mean that there was nothing else going on at Shishur Sevay. The year 2015 started with lots of things going on. So we thought it would be nice to share some of our experiences with you.

January 1st: Birthday

Right on the first of January we celebrated the Birthday of four of our girls.  As you can tell from the pictures, the day already started well in the early morning. Balloons, singing, and cake of course. All these things stand for a great birthday party.

January 2nd: Visitors

Just like every year in the past we had visitors on the second of January. The Family Foss from the US cam e to visit Shishur Sevay, and the sign of the IMH orphanage in our backyard. This sign has become a symbol, for families who adopted children from this orphanage. Dr. Harrison was able to get it after IMH was closed and put it up in the backyard of Shishur Sevay.DSC_0154 - 2015-01-02 at 13-30-44 - 2015-01-02 um 1:30:44 pm

January 3rd: Shanti Aunty

This day was a very happy day for the girls. Shanti Devi came back to Shishur Sevay after an exhausting travel to the US. We were so happy to see her back, and she was as well.

January 6th: AFOs for Bono and Ganga

We ordered customized AFOs for Bono and Ganga. These will help them to have better traction when using the walker, since they have difficulties to keep their feet straight. Both of them love the using the walker!

January 12th: Assembly

Once every other week we have an assembly where the girls present what they have learned about or what the experienced. Archie was the youngest presenter that day and showed us matching shapes and fruits on the whiteboard. She loves school and proudly carries her schoolbag in the classroom upstairs every morning. Ganga and one of the older  girls did a presentation together on the civil war in Syria which truly shows the advantage of our Ichche Dana Learning Center.

January 13th: In the park

Well, there is a separate post on this already, but it
was such a nice morning for everyone involved, so it is really worth talking about again. All of the girls were involved and  everybody had a lot of fun. You can read more about it and find plenty of pictures HERE.

January 24th: Saraswati Puja

The puja of Saraswati, the goddess of arts, knowledge, wisdom, music, and learning was of course celebrated here at Shishur Sevay. The girls did the most of the ceremonials. Traditionally the girls dress up for that day, and wear saris. Even Archie tried one but decided very quickly that she does not like it too much and quickly changed  again. You can see more pictures on our facebook page. During the ceremony Ganga was on Tobii and had a lot of fun with Mummy, Dr. Harrison.

also inJanuary:

Ordinary extraordinary mornings.

January 17th was not a special morning in the sense of something unusual or unseen was going on at Shishur Sevay. It was just that this time Dr. Harrison was able to take a few photos in the morning when most of the girls are still lying on the mats. I don’t think, that there is much more to say about it.

Shishur Sevay Children’s Office

Yes, there have been some pictures on facebook already, and some of them gave a pretty good idea on what it is or will be. It all started with Dr. Harrison cleaning on of the cabinets in her office and a careless remark  of me (John). When the cabinet was totally empty at one point my thoughts just escaped through my mouth without: “Oh wow, this would make a wonderful playhouse for the little ones.” I admit, that I was not prepared for Dr. Harrison’s response on that. “Good. We’ll do that!”…Well and we did. I cut four windows in the doors, and all the girls  together painted it beautifully on the outside. For the little girls it’s a place to work, to play, to have fun, to sleep and to laugh, all IN Dr. Harrison’s office.

All too often people said that the office should look more serious. Well…That is a nice response to them. The children here have priority, and the adults take care of that.

It has been a great start in the year 2015 and there is a lot more to come in the future. In the meantime we will also finish the Annual Report, which not only sums up what happened in the past year but also presents a lot of informations about us.
